Wood leaves the heaviest deposits — every fire lays down another thin layer of creosote on the flue walls, and after a season of regular burning that layer is thick enough to matter. Gas and factory-built systems collect less, but they still gather soot, ash and debris. Chimney flue cleaning is the core of the work: the service focuses on removing that buildup from the flue and the chimney system it feeds. Residential chimney cleaning covers wood-burning fireplaces, inserts and the chimneys above them. Stage 3 creosote, the hard tar-like glaze, does not come away with a standard clean and needs chemical treatment first.

What Chimney Cleaning Removes
Three things, mostly. Soot is the fine black powder combustion leaves behind — it dulls the draft and marks whatever it touches. Creosote is the condensed byproduct of burning wood, and it is the one that matters: flammable, harder as it ages, and once it has glazed over a standard clean will not shift it. Debris is everything else — ash, fallen mortar, leaves, twigs and nesting material that has worked its way into the flue.
Where deposits have glazed hard onto the liner, the job is creosote removal rather than a standard clean. Where something is physically blocking the flue rather than coating it, that is chimney blockage removal.
Signs a Chimney Needs Cleaning
Smoke drifting back into the room instead of drawing up the flue. A tarry or campfire smell from the fireplace when it is cold, strongest on humid days. Black flakes on the smoke shelf or in the firebox. Fires that are slow to catch and burn lazily. A dark, shiny film where the flue walls are visible.
None of that tells you how thick the deposits actually are — it tells you a look is overdue. Cleaning needs vary with fuel type, fireplace use and the amount of buildup present. A wood-burning fireplace lit most evenings through the winter is a different case from a gas appliance lit a handful of times.
Chimney Cleaning or Fireplace Cleaning?
Different ends of the same setup. Fireplace cleaning is the firebox end — the grate, the hearth, the glass on an insert, the soot and ash in the part you actually look at. Chimney cleaning works above that: the smoke shelf, the smoke chamber and the flue, where creosote and debris collect out of sight.
If the brickwork around the opening is sooty but the fire draws fine, fireplace cleaning is the closer match. If the draft has changed or you can smell the flue in the room, start here.
