What a Chimney Sweep Does
Sweeping is about buildup rather than diagnosis. The point of it is to get the deposits off the inside of the flue and out of the chimney: soot, hardened creosote, ash and loose debris. A coated flue is one that draws badly, and a flue that draws badly pushes smoke back into the room.
There is a limit to what sweeping will do. A flue that has glazed over needs creosote removal instead. A flue with nesting material or anything else lodged in it is a job for chimney blockage removal, and that comes before sweeping makes any sense.
How Chimney Sweeping Addresses Flue Buildup
Creosote does not sit loose inside a chimney. It condenses onto the flue and hardens as it ages, which is why sweeping is about working the deposits off that surface rather than simply drawing them out. How that is approached varies from chimney to chimney — height, construction, how the flue runs, and how heavy the buildup has become all change the job. What does not vary is the target: the buildup inside the flue, rather than only the part of the fireplace you can see from the room.
When Sweeping Is the Right Call
When the chimney is in use and the flue needs clearing. Smoke drifting back into the room, a tarry smell from a cold fireplace, black flakes on the smoke shelf, fires that will not draw. Wood-burning fireplaces and inserts build up fastest, because creosote comes out of wood smoke. Wood stove systems are covered by wood stove cleaning rather than by this service.
When it is not: a chimney that has hardly been lit since it was last swept does not need sweeping again, and a chimney with a crack, a leak or something that has moved needs assessing before anyone sweeps it.
