Damage shows itself in different ways: a crack, a stain, a piece of the stack on the ground, a fireplace that has stopped drawing, something at the top that looks wrong from the garden. Each of those points at a different repair. Several are specific enough to have a service and a page of their own — the flue liner, the crown, the joint with the roof, water getting in, the brickwork itself, or a stack far enough gone that rebuilding rather than repairing is the question. This page is the starting point when you know something is wrong but not yet which of those it is, and it is also where the chimney damage that does not fit neatly into one of those categories belongs.
The repair follows from the problem rather than the other way round. Where the problem is water getting in rather than something broken, that is chimney leak repair. Where a stack has gone past what repairing addresses, chimney rebuild is the service that applies.

Signs a Chimney May Need Repair
Cracks in the stack, or pieces of it turning up in the garden. A crown that looks broken up from the ground. A cap missing or sitting askew. Staining, damp or white salt marks on the outside. Rust where there was none. A firebox that has started to open up at the joints. Smoke that comes back into the room when it used to draw.
None of these tells you on its own what has failed. Any one of them may point to more than one cause, and the appropriate repair depends on the issue rather than on the symptom you noticed first. That is what this page is for: working out which of the repairs is the one you actually need.
What Type of Chimney Repair Fits the Problem?
Most of it sorts into categories. A flue that has cracked, gapped or corroded is a liner question, and chimney liner repair is the service for it. Deterioration at the top of the stack — the sloped surface capping the masonry — is chimney crown repair. Trouble at the join where the chimney passes through the roof is chimney flashing repair.
Where the damage is confined to the joints between the bricks rather than the bricks themselves, chimney tuckpointing is usually the narrower and cheaper answer. And where several of these are true at once, or where none of them obviously is, chimney repair is the broad service that covers it.
General Chimney Repair or Masonry Repair?
If the problem is specifically damaged brick or mortar, chimney masonry repair is the service that covers it, and it is the better page to start on. Spalled faces, missing units and open joints are its subject rather than this page's.
Chimney repair is broader than that. It is the right starting point when the chimney has a problem that is not obviously about the brickwork, when more than one thing seems to be wrong at once, or when you simply do not know yet which of the specialist services applies.
Water Problems Are Their Own Service
Water gets its own page. Staining on a ceiling near the chimney breast, damp on the wall beside it, a musty smell from the fireplace after rain — that is water-entry intent, and chimney leak repair is the service focused on it.
It is worth separating because water can enter at several points and the repair follows from which one it is. Chimney repair remains the broad service for chimney damage generally; where the problem is described as a leak, start with the leak page.
When Damage May Be More Extensive
Some damage is past the point a repair addresses. A stack that is visibly leaning or out of line, masonry that has come apart over a large area, or a chimney that has moved is a reason to have it looked at rather than patched, and it may fall outside what a surface repair can do. Where reconstruction rather than repair is the question, chimney rebuild is the service that applies.
And where what you want first is the condition of the chimney evaluated rather than a repair carried out, a chimney inspection is the separate service focused on assessing condition.
